While our SMU students were in London, Brother William scheduled a stop to see their performance of the comedic satire "Greater Tuna" at TARA Studio. Not only is the overseas experience an extraordinary opportunity for our students, from reviews of the show, it seems that Londoners also look forward to the return of our students each year.

London Group 2011

Our London Group for Fall Semester is off to a great start!!

<img style="float:left; Of course you are! Enjoying local delicacies is part of the wonderful experience of overseas travel, but eating the wrong things could make you very sick. Many countries don’t have the same food handling and preparation standards found in the United States. Food that is not stored or cooked properly could make you sick. Do your research on which local foods and drinks to avoid.

~Stay away from raw foods.

~Choose your local restaurants carefully. If it looks dirty in the dining room, it could be worse in the kitchen.

~Local water supplies could also be a breeding ground for bacteria. Always use bottled water (even to brush your teeth), and beware of fake bottled water – tap water sold as bottled.Be aware that ice may also be made from local tap water.

~Practicing healthy habits, like washing your hands regularly, will help ensure that you stay healthy and enjoy your entire trip.

While you are keeping your eye on what you are drinking, make sure you keep an eye on who’s pouring it as well. Without sounding too scary, there’s the possibility of being served something you didn’t order. A number of illegal drugs can be slipped into your drink. These drugs can make you sleepy, unaware, or even unconscious. Remain aware of your drinks and:

~Don't drink anything you did not open yourself or that you didn't see being opened or poured by a bartender.

~Always watch your drink at parties and bars and get a new one if you leave it unattended for a while.

Retrieved June 13, 2011 from Students Abroad.com http://studentsabroad.state.gov/health/stayinghealthy.php

Sievers shares experiences in CC-CS newsletter

Rachel Sievers, who went to Spain in 2009, has a piece in this CC-CS (Center for Cross-Cultural Studies) newsletter under “Alumni Stories.” To read the article, go to www.spanishstudies.org/index.php?id=720.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 161px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hvyWGBCu8K4/TYN0sdjd11I/AAAAAAAAAO0/zETXd7Y7fcU/s320/Rachel%2BSievers%2Bwith%2BFamily.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5585436270065997650" />

(Rachel's on the left)

Asking the Right Questions:

The following is a list of issues to consider and questions to ask when looking for an appropriate study abroad program. Along with speaking with program administrators in the U.S., it is suggested that you ask to speak to students who participated in the program in the past. If possible, speak directly with one of the program administrators abroad to find out both the strengths and weaknesses of the program.

Courses Available: What courses can be taken abroad? Will they be taught by U.S. home campus professors or foreign university faculty or local nationals? Do they have Ph.D.s, Master’s Degrees, Bachelor’s Degrees? Have they taught U.S. students? Is the set-up traditional classroom or experiential learning?

Transfer Credit: It is important to know how courses taken abroad will count towards your U.S. degree program (major, minor, language, general education, etc.).Ask your academic advisor about the transferability of study abroad courses into your U.S. degree program.

Housing: Is housing provided as part of the program? Is it in an international university dorm? With a family/homestay? In an apartment? What part of the city? How far from where the courses are offered? Near public transportation?

Cost: What are the costs of the program, including tuition, administrative fees, room and board, international travel, in-country travel and excursions, extra costs?

Where?: What country/region/city do you want to study in? Where in the city are the program office/courses located? Is it in a modern city, a rural location, or a developing area with limited resources?

How long?: Is the program available for a year, semester, quarter, summer, short-term?

When?: Will a program session be offered when you are planning to go, or when you are available to participate? How will the season and schedule abroad compare to that at your home campus?

Language: Do you want to study in a country where the language is not English? How much language training should you have before going? What type of language training is offered abroad? Are courses offered in both English and the other country's language?

Support Services: Does your U.S. home campus provide academic advisement and counseling to students through program orientations (some campuses require that all students take a semester-long course before studying abroad)? What types of support services and administrative offices are in place abroad?

Who’s in Charge of Safety?: Is there someone at the U.S. office and abroad who is specifically responsible for students' health and safety? What policies and procedures do they have in place?

Program Evaluations: Quality programs will take part in regular evaluations of their programs, with feedback from staff, faculty, and students. Ask if you can see these evaluations.

Retrieved 1-28-2011 http://www.studentsabroad.com/qualityprograms.html

Some Tools for Finding a Study Abroad Program:

~ U.S. Home Campus Study Abroad Office/Resource Center: The best place to look for a study abroad program is your U.S. home campus study abroad office. While visiting our undergraduate students in London recently, the importance of preparing them for lives in our ever more multicultural and global world became overwhelmingly clear. The students — business, sociology, political science, music recording, public relations, English and theatre majors — are studying global realities in the midst of a culture that is grappling with rising extremists opposing the multicultural openness of England. Even as the students are exploring these realities from an academic perspective and in the middle of Black History month in England, the Theatre majors are presenting a play titled “God’s Country,” a powerful, controversial and informative docu-drama written by Steven Dietz, concerning the absurdities and fanaticism of the white supremacist movement of the 1980's in the United States.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 152px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_FkcYh70ef64/TNF58iQEkeI/AAAAAAAAAN8/6xQ_lIy6jFw/s320/Br.+William+luncheon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5535339497908376034" />

Health & Safety Abroad, Videos Presented by HTH Worldwide

Dr. Frank Gillingham, medical director for HTH Worldwide, recently completed a video series to help study abroad students prepare for their experience. Most people never bother to do this, so have no idea what policies apply to using your card, domestically OR abroad. The agreement will cover transaction fees, late fees, APR (annual percentage rate), credit limits and more. You should also visit your local bank to know if you can use your debit card abroad and if there are associated fees. In my experience, this can often be the most cost effective way to pay for services abroad and to obtain cash. However, read on, as there can be issues with these too!

2) Have a plan for when you will and won’t use the credit card. Will it be for emergencies only? Will it be for specific purchases such as souvenirs or hotels? Know the cost/benefit of using the card in these cases. For example, if your credit card comes with a rewards program and you plan to use the card to obtain airline miles (or that “gift” electronic gadget that you’re only 1000 points away from scoring), realize that it could easily cost you the same amount, or more, in transaction fees to reach these reward program goals. It is necessary to take the time to understand the consequences of purchases abroad. You will need a strategy! For example, what service fee will be charged? (It is often a % of the purchase amount vs a flat fee.) Charging purchases in the adrenaline rush of international travel and study can quickly snowball into a staggering bill and years of payments when not managed properly. Not managing the budget can result in issues with credit scores (in the US) – which is a lifeline for future credit. Take it seriously!

3) Notify the credit card company of your upcoming study abroad and tell them where you plan to study and travel. Your card can and often will be frozen if there is an unusual pattern of purchases. Carrying a 2nd, back up, card can help if this does happen even after calling your card company. You can ask for a back up copy of your main credit card, but don’t activate it abroad unless your first card is frozen. And have a back up plan in case the card isn’t available – keep a reasonable supply of cash on you. A reasonable amount will depend on where you are studying and traveling. Ask whether you’ll need to show ID (such as your passport) when using the card abroad. This is often the case in some locations or venues.

4) Chip cards with a PIN (personal identification number) cards can often be more efficient abroad. Many other countries will not be able to process credit (or debit) cards that only have a magnetic strip, which is the type of card that the US likes to issue. The US is very behind in this area and it has caused many woes for travelers abroad. In these cases, there is often no ability to manually punch the card number into the machine either. And be forewarned that some establishments (in the US and abroad) will not accept the American Express card (chip or no chip) simply because their processing fees are higher than Mastercard and Visa.

5) Sign up for on-line bill payment. This will allow you to quickly see your purchases and associated fees, as well as receive emails with the due date of your payments. This will help you to avoid any late fees and allow time to adjust your budget, based on your spending patterns, if needed.

Article by Missy Gluckmann, International Education Tools, Travel Tips, faculty led study abroad, safety abroad. This may seem like a bit of an overstatement, but the reality is that the physical prep work can be as confusing and as overwhelming as any other part of the experience. Once you're there, of course, you'll have the time of your life. But in order to make the most of your semester or year abroad, you'll need to spend the weeks leading up to departure day making a concerted effort to pack wisely, research well, and plan ahead. Do these three things, however, and you'll be able to focus on what really matters once you're there: making the most out of your experience.

Pack Wisely

Remember those slumber parties everyone had as a little kid, the ones for which your mother packed a way-too-big duffel bag with every item of clothing you owned in order to ensure that you'd be comfortable regardless of weather conditions or the efficacy of the heating and air conditioning in the house you'd be sleeping in?

That was nothing compared to this kind of packing.

You'll want to start by researching what kind of weather to expect. Most programs, of course, will include this information in one of the many envelopes or packages you should expect to receive prior to your departure. But it never hurts to investigate it yourself. What has the weather recently been like at your destination? Are there long-range forecasts you can find on the Internet? Educate yourself as much as possible before you leave, and pack appropriate clothing. If you'll be in Paris in February of March, it's probably a good idea to buy a top-notch raincoat while you're still at home. If you're leaving for an environmental-studies program in Ecuador in August, a few pairs of shorts are appropriate. But don't limit your selection of clothing to just what will probably be useful: Weather forecasting is an inexact science, and monthly and seasonal temperature and precipitation averages are based on data from a number of years. That means that the weather gods will not always be benevolent and do what they're supposed to. Sometimes it snows in Jerusalem. Once in a while, Geneva hits 70 degrees in March. Make sure you pack a few contingency items, as well. You never know, after all, what each day will bring. You should also consider the local clothing customs. Remember, not all countries view personal expression the way we do here in the United States, and the way college students dress for classes on your home campus will likely be very different from how they will at your school abroad. It is a safe bet that local clothing customs in your destination will be a bit more conservative, or a least a bit more dressy, than what you're used to. America, after all, is a rather casual place. In New York in August, for example, you'll likely see all kinds of clothing, from snappy linen suits to tank tops that barely cover up what one would assume they're supposed to. But in Rome or Cairo, lightweight long pants and a flattering hot-weather top are much more appropriate. And no matter how cold or miserable the weather is, a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie are never appropriate for a Parisian café or a Viennese coffeehouse. Of course, it is also worth noting that you should attempt to take an appropriate, but not excessive amount of clothing. You will presumably be lugging your suitcases through airports and other unknown environs. And of course, you're going to acquire additional stuff while abroad whether it be souvenirs for the family, enchanting local garb, or boxes of pictures. Just keep it in mind when you're tempted to pack that extra pair of cute jeans you might want to wear at least once. (If you can't think of several different uses for a particular item, think carefully about whether you really need it.

Research Well

No matter how much you have traveled in the past, no matter how many countries you've visited, living in a foreign land for an extended period of time is totally different. A vacation is about seeing the sights and eating a few good meals. Studying abroad is about integrating yourself into the culture and adopting the ways of the locals -- at least to some extent -- over the course of your time there. A little research will go a long way toward making your transition as painless as possible. The world is a beautiful and varied place, and the range of customs is seemingly infinite. The more you do to prepare yourself for the new and the different, the easier it will be for you to accept and perhaps even adopt these new ways of doing things. In Arab countries, it is rude for men to cross their legs in a way that shows the bottom of their shoes; this is considered insulting to the person at whom your feet are pointing. In part of Greece and Italy, the thumbs-up -- what we take to mean "Great! Awesome!" -- is actually the equivalent of giving someone the middle finger. The list goes on and on. Familiarize yourself with the local customs before you leave home; the last thing you want to do is respond to a Roman waiter's inquiry about the quality of your spaghetti aglio e olio with a big ol' thumbs-up. You may never get dessert. The old line about knowledge being the key to success is even more relevant when applied to a student who is preparing to study abroad. If you arm yourself with a solid understanding of the customs and general modes of interaction in your destination country, you will have done all you can to ensure a fun, educational, and rewarding experience abroad.

Plan Ahead

Living in a foreign country is vastly different from visiting it as a tourist. You'll likely have to set up a foreign bank account, arrange for cellphone service, and, depending on the program you've chosen, find an apartment. Fortunately, the Internet has made it possible to do most of these things from the comfort of home. You should also arrive in your destination country with enough of the foreign currency to get you by for the first day, which will entail a whirlwind of activity that may very well prevent you from hitting an ATM right away. It's also a good idea to have a phone card with you. This way, even if you have problems with your email or cellphone when you first arrive, you'll still be able to contact people. Then there is the issue of language. It's always a good idea to take a semester or three of coursework in the language of your destination country. But if your decision to study abroad was made too late for that, there are programs you can buy that will help. These range from simple and inexpensive phrasebooks and audio CD's to computer programs that fully immerse you in the language of the place and that cost hundreds of dollars. Even though you will adapt to the foreign language once you have lived and interacted with speakers of it for four to six weeks, this process will be that much easier if you learn as much as you can before you go. Finally, never underestimate the importance of peanut butter. In other words, always pack some sort of taste of home that will last the entire length of your time abroad. You may love Italian or Mexican or German food, but the time will come, once the initial newness of everything fades a bit, that you will crave a bite or two of some American standby that you just cannot get overseas. A jar of peanut butter or a tube of Pringles will provide a much needed sense of culinary familiarity when you need it. They take up very little room in a suitcase but provide a huge psychological boost in those moments of (hopefully fleeting) homesickness.

The bottom line is this: Your preparations for a semester or a year abroad will range from exciting to stressful to joyous to nerve-wracking. The months and weeks leading up to your departure will be some of the most exciting and frightening you've ever had. It is important to enjoy even that part of the process, and to make the most of it. You’re more worldly, more cultured, and excited to share your experiences with your friends and family. You feel like a changed person, but the problem is, everyone else is exactly the same. And not only that, they expect you to be the same, too.

So how do you relate to them without coming across as braggy or snobby? Here are some suggestions from a kid who hasn't been abroad yet, but who knows what it's like to hear never-ending tales about Brazilian carnivals, Italian wine, and Australian rugby matches. This brings us to our first piece of advice:

#5 Don’t go on and on and on and on.
Your friends and family are interested in your abroad experience, but that doesn't mean you have to start every sentence with, “When I was abroad... ” followed by an hour-long narrative. People only want to spend so much time hearing stories and looking at pictures. Remember, no matter how fascinating an experience was for you at the time, not all experiences make for interesting stories.

#4 Don’t pretend to be from your host country.
Yes, spending a semester in another country does help you get to know that country. Yes, you adopted new practices and tried new things. Still, let's not lose perspective: You’re not actually from your host country. So while we encourage you to find ways to integrate your new knowledge into your life at home, remember that you can't bring it all back with you.

#3 Don’t act "holier-than-thou."
One of the most exciting things about living abroad is being exposed to different tastes, perspectives, and practices. Sometimes this means reevaluating your own, whether that results in a newfound appreciation for quality coffee or newfound horror over the quantity of plastic bags that your compatriots use at the grocery store. Still, nobody wants to be lectured to, or hear you bash their tastes.

#2 Don’t flaunt it.
It's important to remember that it's not possible for everyone to go abroad. There are factors that hold many people back, like financial restraints, academic requirements, or family matters. You've been afforded a great opportunity that isn't necessarily available to everyone, even though it should be.

#1 Don’t hate on the United States.
Yes, it can be hard to settle back into your old American life. Maybe it seems boring and unexotic, or maybe new things suddenly bother you—the pace of life, the individualistic mentality, the mass consumption. But the fact is, there are many things that are wonderful about the United States, and they should not go unnoticed or unappreciated.

Instead: Walk through a new neighborhood, find a new restaurant, meet a new person. Go on a road trip with your friends, or take a cheap flight to somewhere you've never been. Sometimes we forget about how many cultural enclaves exist right here in our own country: Take time to explore them. Bring that eagerness to learn and explore home with you. And if you don't always like what you find, use your newly expanded perspective to figure out how to make things better.

Article retrieved September 3, written by Colin May, Glimpse staff, supported by National Georgraphic Society

Why study abroad?

Academic credit - The most obvious reason why students study abroad is to earn academic credit. You should consider the type of credit you will earn on your study abroad program. Will you earn credit towards your major or elective credit only? Will you receive grades or pass/fail credit only? You may study abroad to earn upper division credits in your major field or you may be overseas to earn some of your core or general education hours your freshman year.

Language acquisition - The world market place is shrinking rapidly, many companies require second languages. Foreign languages are not only valuable in the work force they are valuable in the real world.

Practical experience - Study abroad coupled with an international internship is an incredible way to gain some real world experience. Additionally you may find that only an international program can offer the real expertise you desire in your education. Australia is a great place to find a marine biology program, the engineering labs in Sweden may exceed your facilities at your home institution, and peace studies in Geneva would offer an insight that couldn't be matched in Nebraska.

Resume building - International experience is ranked high among many employers as a critical asset for prospective employees. Study abroad shows that you are resourceful, adventurous, internationally minded, and diverse.

Experience of a lifetime - In a couple years you will forget the name of your literature professor or the name of your dorm, but you'll never forget the friends you made or the incredible experiences you shared.

Article retrieved July 22, 2009 from www.studyabroaddirectory.com/study-articles.cfm

A few tips to help navigate airport security - By the editors at Conde Nast Traveler

When should I plan to get to the airport? Two hours before your flight, if not earlier. Check with your airline before heading to the airport to find out if your flight is delayed. You should also check the wait times at security checkpoints, which the TSA lists here. Remember: The more time you have, the less frantic you'll feel.

What's the best way to get through the security checkpoint? Wear slip-on shoes so that you're not trying to juggle your carry-on bags while tying your laces. Avoid wearing jewelry and accessories made of metal (belt buckles, etc.). The more objects you have to take off at security, the more hassle and the longer the delay.

Keep yourself organized: Place your ticket and passport in one spot, and designate a pocket in your carry-on or coat for keys, cell phone, and other metal objects. Similarly, keep all your electronic items—laptop, camera, iPod, cell phone—in one bag, so that security doesn't need to dig into various bags to inspect these items. Above all, be patient and polite. This is a stressful time for everyone, including security personnel and airline employees. If you follow the rules and keep your temper in check, the whole process will be a lot less unpleasant.

Do you have any tips on packing? Inside both carry-on and checked luggage, keep your clothing and personal items organized in clear plastic bags. That way, if your luggage is searched, it's easier for security personnel to inspect and repack it neatly. (This goes for both carry-on and checked baggage, either of which may be inspected by hand.) Don't pack your bags too tight, either: Security will do a better job repacking them if there's extra space and less clutter.
What do I need to know about the ban on liquids, aerosols, and gels? They are still in effect although the list of banned items may change frequently, so check the Transportation Security Administration (http://www.tsa.gov/) before your trip for the latest list. It's awesome!

Italy Group 2009

Update from Christa Spaulding studying in Ireland

I'm having a great time in Galway, I love it! It was alittle stressful at first signing up for classes, because their system is so laid back. But I got into all the ones I wanted, so it worked out good. This place has a sense of magic that is indescribable. The flight over here was probably the longest ride I have ever taken in my life. I was way to anxious on the ride so it seemed like it was taking forever! Everyone is starting to get into a routine... for the first week it was hard sleeping but now I am starting to really get settled in and enjoying the time here.

The real gem so far in this trip is Fiesole. It is a such a beautiful place where we stay. The view down towards Florence is pretty amazing, and the food is something else. I mean how many times have you heard how great the food is, but in reality it is better than what people would describe to you. The best part about it, is it doesn't matter what place you visit. The food is spectacular whether you go to a restaruant or you go to a little walk in bakery.

I will talk to you later Vicki.

Lorenzo

An email message from a former student, Myra Loomer

Hi Vicki, I doubt you remember me as I was part of the class of 2003, but I spent a semester abroad in London in 2002. It changed my life so much that I ended up returning to the UK and have been living in Scotland for the past 3 years. This year I was lucky enough to finally be able to mesh time and money to meet up with Dr. Connor. Twice, even, once in London and once where I live in Glasgow. I have attached a picture of the two of us in George Square, Glasgow. I thought it might be something neat to add to the blog or post on a wall, showing how much one semester can have an effect on a person, even 6 years later. Courses are taught in English and emphasize current international events. Students are encouraged to participate in special lectures, company tours, and unique personal development opportunities.

The campus offers students the cultural experience of living in a small Italian community, while providing access to the celebrated art and historical treasures of the Veneto region. The fullservice facility includes classrooms, a cafeteria, residence halls, computer and language labs, and modern athletic facilities including an indoor swimming pool, a cardio and weight room, and a gymnasium.

Every semester students attend three special dinner outings with professors and staff at a formal Italian restaurant. Past student highlights have included olive picking on the Grappa Mountains, touring local wineries, and learning to toss a pizza at a local pizzeria. These — and other local events — allow students to experience traditions that make the Veneto Region unique.

Italian junior and senior high-school students also attend classes on campus. Some of these students also reside on campus. American and Italian students live in different buildings and attend different classes, but cultural interaction is encouraged through social activities such as Halloween parties, American Thanksgiving dinners, and language practice groups.

Paderno del Grappa, view from campus window
__________________________________________________________
APPLY TODAY! - Application deadline October 15th for Spring Semester.
Contact Jackie Baker for more information jbaker@smumn.edu or Ext 6695

What is the HECUA Program?

HECUA - Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs

HECUA is an organization of 20 liberal arts colleges, universities and associations dedicated to education for social justice.

Experience of a lifetime - In a couple years you will forget the name of your literature professor in Grenoble or the name of your dorm in Beijing, but you'll never forget the friends you made or the incredible experiences you shared.

Study Abroad in Florence, Italy - Spring 2009

This twelve week Spring semester program is based in Fiesole, which overlooks central Florence. Here are some things to think about when choosing a program.

Your Priorities: What do you want to get out of studying abroad? Are there certain classes you want to be able to take? Is there a certain location you want to go? Do you want to develop or enhance language skills?

Academic Goals: What are your academic goals? Do you want to focus on requirements for your major? Do you want to fulfill language requirements? Do you want to satisfy general education requirements?

Professional Goals. What are your professional goals? Would learning a language be useful in your career? What location of study will be most useful in your future career, or most impressive to an employer?

Money Matters: How much can you afford? What is included in the program costs? What is the exchange rate?

Cultural Attraction: Is there a country or culture you’ve always been drawn to and fascinated by?

Interests: What do you like to do? Are those activities available in the country you are considering?

Know Yourself: How independent are you? Do you want to study abroad with several people you know or by yourself? How well do you adjust to new situations?

Do not choose a program just because:
All your friends are going there.
Someone you know went there and really liked it.
It has a great party atmosphere.
